I shall be thankful to the viewers if they bring to my notice anything relevant to this blog has been ommitted.

CONTROL OVER THE OLDAGE HOMES BY GOVERNMENT
It has been noticed that there is no infrastructue in Social Welfare Deptt.of either Central or State Governments to lookafter the function of the Oldage Homes and the welfare of the Oldage Home boarders. It is proposed that the governments may impose liseince to the Oldage Homes which should be renewed every year after inspection carried out by the appropriate authorities of Soicial Welfare Deptts. of Cent theral and State. There are lots of instances where unemployed men opened Oldage Homes at their own house or elsewhere like stationery shops. Their motto is to earn money at any cost. Many cases they do not bother about the minimum needs of the boarders. As most of the boarders are aged and infirm they passess their days quitely finding no other way out. Unless Government or Civic Bodies do not come forward with some benevolent policies, a major portion of the boarders of this types of Oldage Homes will pass their days till death uncared for.
In this connection I would like to bring to viewers' notice that as per my personal SURVEY, I have found that a good number of Oldage Home boarders (Female Boarders are more in percentage than Male counterpart are suffering from DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS out of which some boarders are suffering from DEMENSIA or ALZHEIMER.If their relatives arrange whole-time attendant and keep watch whether the suffering boarder is properly attended to,then it is some how, alright. In many cases this type of unfortunate boarders pass their days without attendants un-fed/half-fed/not properly clothed. Government should specify some norms which should be mandetory to the Oldage Home authrities to observe. Non-compliance of the norms should attract specific sections of Criminal Proc. Code (neglect/abuse to elderlies).EVERY OLDAGE HOMES SHOULD HAVE FIRE PROTECTION ARRANGEMENTS AND IMMERGENT MEDICAL SUPPORT FACILITIES VIZ.ARRANGEMENT OF OXYGEN GAS ETC. AND A TRAINED NURSE OR AYYEA. A good number of Oldage Homes are situated in villages far away from nearest city but those homes are not having their own transport to remove a sick boarder to nearest hospital, if necessary. Sometimes serious patient die for delay in getting transport.

LOW/NO COST OLDAGE HOMES
This is for information for 'low income group/no income-group people' that there are some 'LOW COST' and 'NO COST' Oldage Homes in some villages in West Bengal, as well as, in Kolkata Metropolitn Area (managed by charitable trust/missionaries/NGOs etc,). Above mentioned oldage homes keep their inmates in dormitaries accommodating eight to twenty boarders in one hall. I have found such homes at Barasat & Bashirhat about a decade ago. These Homes are meant for real 'destitutes', who has no shelter oh their own or peoples having megre monthly income bt which they cannot afford charges of an average Oldage Homes. To name afew such homes are Sarada Mission at Barasat (N-24 Prgs). One such Home is functioning at Narayanpur within Rajarhat-Narayanpur Municipality (to reach avail auto from Kaikhali near Airport).Beside this ihe following Oldage Homes belong to above category :

OLD AGE HOMES ARE SOMETIMES A BLESSINGS
Ofcourse, Oldage Homes are some times a blessings to some elderly peoples. For example in our present day society most of the people are 'self-centered'. Either they avoid to take responsibilities of the elderlies even having income (from pension or interest from investments in Banks or Post Office etc)/income from immovable assets etc.) and the young generations in many families misbehave with their parents/dependents (even when they are not financially dependent). These people pass their days in great humiliation. For them it is better to go to an Old Age Home. On the other hand, I found some couples having no issue, and they are growing old, (or widow (s)/widower (s) lost their only son (s) in their domestic homes). A day will come when all of them will be unable to pull on their day-to-day life. For them the Old Age Home is the last resort. Of course the 'Home' should be standard one.

SURVIVAL STRATEGIES FOR ELDERLY (WHO ARE NEGLECTED IN THEIR HOMES)
1)Elderly people who are intending to shift to any Oldage Home , my humble advice to them that before selecting any 'HOME', be sure that the HOME is registered under Societies Act or Companies Act. Make possible all enquires about the Good Will of the HOME from the local peoples. Do not hand over post dated cheques to 'HOME' authority except valid reasons. There are two types of HOME : (1) The HOME keeps deposits ranging from 1 lac. to 3 lacs. besides monthly charges and (2) HOME keeps only three to four months monthly charges as advance +admission fee 10,000/- to 20,000/- plus monthly charges to be paid as usual.Further, some HOMEs are Premium Oldage Home, their depositand charges are high, as well as, monthly charges. There are a few HOMEs who provide 'Room Service'to the boarders, the boarders get their Tea,Tiffins, Meals etc in their rooms/flats. This aspect to be kept in mind while searching for a HOME, as some other HOMEs provide room service only when the boarder is sick and unable to move.In most of the Homes the boarders are to take their Meals and Dinners in the Common Dining Hall sitting togather at a fixed time. There are also two types of Management of HOMEs - One is 'Non-profit' basis (NGOs etc.) and other is 'Commercial'. Select the HOME according to your might. Don't give signed blank cheques to your son/daughter, relatives or friends while leaving for oldage home. When you are in HOME and is feeling insecured to keep valuable documents including cheque books, fixed deposit certificates etc.,under your custody, you may keep them under the custody of the Propreitor/Official Incharge of the HOME and get a receipt duly signed by the officials and a signature of an witness of a reliable boarder of the HOME thereon.
2) Don't part with your immovable /movable poperties. If you are a pension holder keep the P.P.O. Book/Cheque Book with you. If you have got investment in banks/post offices, keep the documents under your personal custody. Those assets will look after you in your distress.
3) Central Government has amended Criminal Proceedure Code to protect the elderly people. If you do not have substantial monthly income, you may seek protection under amended Criminal Proceedure Code. If you are totally neglected and you do not have any near ones and you money to afford the charges of a Home, only then you move to an Oldage Home.
4) If you need any assistance, you may contact HELPAGE INDIA, Phone No:1800-345125 (Free Help Line).
NOTE: Sometimes it is seen in many cases that elderly peoples admitted to Oldage Homes by their High profile sons or relatives keeping under their custody post dated cheques signed by the elderly man or woman who has been sent to HOME. Those high profile relatives (?) send only monthly charges to management that also not regular. It is to be mentioned in this connection that DAUGHTERS (SOMETIME SISTERS) PAY VISITS TO THEIR FATHER/MOTHER/BROTHER in
Oldage Homes when their (boarders)established sons take least interest to spare some time to visit his parents and give company to them.
FUTURE OF THE FUTURE !
When an elderly man/woman is admitted to Oldage Home (when the candidate is enough aged or sick) he or she is given a picture of the Oldage Home, as if it is an heaven where he or she would be looked after whole day and night and get nursing and other helps etc. etc. as and when requires. Finding no other way out, they agree and surrender as a prey to their benevolent(?) relatives and get admitted to an HOME for a BETTER FUTURE.In some cases, the so called benevolent relatives send full monthly remittance consisting of HOME's Monthly charges and Pocket expenditures which includes medical expenses required and misc. expenditures on hair oil,tooth-paste, dhobi charges, hair cutting(men's)etc. for a year or so (that too also in most of the cases, from the fund of the boarder the relatives hold custody)) First they start to decrease the amount of remittance of pocket expenditure which includes medical expenditure too. When those type old boarders fell critically sick the management of the Oldage Home, in many cases, fails to get fund from the relatives of the boarder who took responsibility of the boarder under signature at time of admission. The HOME authority is to incur necessary the medical expenses for hospitalisation and follow-up medical treatments etc at their own, if personal fund of the boarder shortfalls, in anticipation of re-imbursement and some times it becomes a problems to get re-imbursement from the relatives. A day comes, you will wounder, when this type of boarders die, their relatives are contacted to takeover the dead body become non-interested showing different plea. In some cases, the body lies 10-12 hours unclaimed. After given ultimatum over phone or sending representative to give them warnning that if the body is not taken away within fixed time, the local Police to be informed. Then they come and take away the body. This is the FUTURE OF THE FUTURE of these 'human beings'.

IMPORTANT 3 C:
CONTINUOUS CONTACT & CARE
COMPASSION
COUNSELLING
CONTINUOUS CONTACT & CARE:
Elderly people requre contineous contact and look-after (Care), 'cause after certain age elderly peoples' health status varies frequently. For example, in morning some one is more or less alright but in evening or at night his B.P. may rise or fall much below or high from the optimum level or other complains may start which was never before. It is common incident that elderly people mainly over 75 years above may get fall, sometimes causing fractures and they become bed-ridden. To avoid this those elderly people should be under continuous contact and care.
COMPASSION :
The Elderly peoples of greater percentage feel themselves helpless economically, physically and socially. It is not in only oldage homes, even in many domestic homes we also find same picture.Now-a-days families' dimension have been curtailed from short to shorttest.MICRO families have born. Families structure is - "HUSBHAND, WIFE AND NORMALLY ONE OR TWO CHILDREN". GRANDPA/GRANDMA has/have no role in the family. Other members of the family should behave in such a way that the elderly member (s) does/do not feel lonely and neglected. They are to be given company. They are also to be inducted in, if not all, in some family matters /problems.Next generation should think that a day will come when they (sons/daughters/close relatives under whose custody/care, the elderly men/women is passing their life), will also be old.
COUNSELLING :
Counselling is very much important to the elderlies (whether in Old Age Homes or own homes). Many of the cases they suffer from fraustration. Some times they even commit suicide or go away to an unknown destination and never return to their homes. With deep regret, I say that a few educated persons have come forward to help these peoples. A countable person are working on OLDAGE PEOPLES. In Kolkata,at least I know one Prof.(Dr.)Prafulla Chakraborty (Ex-ISI) is working on Gerontology and he has already published two books on the subject.Government should come forward and look into the matter and depute Counsellors/ Social Welfare hands to look after the Geriatic Management in Old Age Homes spread over the whole State, Kolkata Metroplitan area in particulat.N.G.Os, Human Right Organisations and Social Welfare Organisations should make aware the elderly men, the previledges they can get protected under law of the soil.
